Jamaica by almost any standard has a high crime rate. The prevalence of crime means that its citizens must take steps to protect their life and property. As I traveled across the island on one of my recent trips, I was struck by the reinforcement on windows, and doors. It felt as if home, a haven, had become a prison.
Most residents, it seemed had resigned themselves to the way of life, but many had also said, we can be creative in how we design the protective bars. I could not help, but feel that it had almost become an unspoken competition.
So while I am sure all would prefer safety, and security, they had learned how to cope, and in the process even created some beauty for others to enjoy.
